About Bergen

Springtime is a wonderful time to come to Bergen and Norway, as the scenery is especially beautiful this time of year. Bergen and the western part of Norway in particular is a spectacular destination with simply an abundance of nature.

Given Norway’s extreme northerly position, its mainland climate is surprisingly mild. Norway is the northernmost country in the world to have open waters, and still enjoys the midnight sun and summer nights bright as day.

Norwegian fjords are famous world wide, and ranked by National Geographic as the most popular of all Unesco World Heritage sites, in competition with sites such as the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos.

Bergen, situated on the west coast, is world renowned as “the gateway to the fjords” and is itself on the Heritage List. Bergen may not be a particularly large city by international standards, but it nevertheless has plenty to offer. The city’s intimate centre is easy to maneuver, and just about everything is in walking distance.

History and long-standing traditions are as important as the city’s vibrant cultural life, and Bergen is a truly unique city, placed by the fjords and surrounded by seven mountains. Few places have such a combination: a city with nature right on its doorstep.
