Online open-source journalism has been a growing area of interest for a long time, including among Norwegian journalists. In this session you will meet Malachy Browne, senior producer of New York Times Visual Investigations – a group that specialises in digital sleuthing and the forensic analysis of videos and images. The team's journalism has revealed how Russia bombed Syrian hospitals, named the Saudi officials who murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and investigated killings by American police. The work has been cited in murder trials, congressional hearings and UN Security Council meetings, it has triggered government inquiries and policing reforms, and has led to the suspension of weapons sales to Saudi Arabia. You will hear more about the methods and techniques employed in this work and see examples of the New York Times Visual Investigations team’s projects.
